When choosing seed blends for your property, there are several things to consider.  Will this seed work well with my lawn?  Will this seed give me the turf color and density that I am looking for?  If you are looking for a cool season perennial grass, then you will most likely want to choose Kentucky bluegrass for your lawn.  Kentucky bluegrass is the most popular variety of bluegrass grass used in lawns today.  This grass blend is desirable because it is of high quality and stellar appearance.  The colors of this grass will range from a medium green to a dark blue-green.  Choosing seed blends with annual rye and Kentucky blue grass work best for new lawns.  Choosing seed blends with only Kentucky bluegrass seed works best for over-seeding existing Kentucky blue grass lawns.

Choosing Seed Blends

Choosing seed blends for your project.

You commonly find bluegrass installed in lawns on the northern half of the United States.  Since there are many options to choose from when selecting a seed variety, choose a blend that best fits your needs.  If your lawn is a low to medium trafficked lawn, then bluegrass is the right fit for you.  Bluegrass seed blends well with other grass varieties and may complement existing lawns containing other species.  If you are looking for that picture perfect grass, bluegrass will deliver.  Bluegrass gets off to a slow start when it comes to germination, but once it is established bluegrass grows at a moderate pace.  Mature plants require adequate moisture and fertilizing to maintain their lush appearance.  As we have seen by recent drought conditions, this variety does not hold up well against the lack of moisture.  This grass however recovers quite well when the moisture returns.

Choosing a mixed variety of seed with the majority component being bluegrass is the ideal choice for establishing a new lawn.  The reason that some annual varieties are mixed with bluegrass is because they germinate quicker.  If you have some seed germinating right away, they help hold other seed in place until they have a chance to germinate.  Having some seed establish itself right away also helps the soil retain moisture.  Some filler seeds are more shade tolerant than bluegrass, which will help make the blend available for distribution for all areas in the lawn.
