Irrigation system shut down.  If you have an irrigations system, it is vital to shut down and winterize your system in the fall.  If you live Iowa where the winter temperatures get below 0 degrees, you probably know all too well the damage that colder temperatures can bring.  If there is water left in your irrigation lines, it will freeze.  If the water freezes, it may crack your water line.  Broken water lines can lead to costly repairs or water damage.

Leaf clean-up.  If you live in an area with mature trees, chances are that you have quite a mess to clean up in the fall.  If you do not clean up your leaves in the fall and they are left on top of your grass over the winter, they may kill your lawn.  It is important to removal as many leaves as possible before the snow hits.  If you have leaves in your gutters, they may obstruct water flow and cause ice dams in the winter.

Shut down and cover up water features.  If you have fountains or other water features on your property, it is important to shut them down for the winter.  If you leave water in these features, the water lines may crack.  Depending on the type of feature, you may want to cover it up over the winter with a tarp or grill cover to keep leaves and other debris out of the feature.
