Lawn rolling is a popular way to reduce bumps and imperfections in a lawn.  There are several ways to perform lawn rolling.  The most effective way to roll your lawn is by using a riding roller-drum machine.  The weight of a ride on roller-drum machine will help level out imperfections.  Hand roller-drums that are filled with water can be effective if used on the right application.  Hand roller-drums have limited weight, which reduces their ability compact uneven soil.

Lawn Rolling

Lawn rolling suggestions.

If you are trying to level out uneven ground by rolling your lawn, you must have realistic expectations.  If you have large dips or pockets in your lawn; lawn rolling will not solve your problem.  In order to fix large low areas, you must add dirt.  After you install dirt in the low area, run your roller over the newly installed dirt.  After rolling the low area a few times, it may be necessary to add more dirt to the low area.  Continue this process until the area is level.

If you have small bumps in your lawn, then use a riding roller-drum machine.  A day before you use the machine to roll your lawn, water your turf grass.  This will help make sure that the soil is moist and help ensure the best results.  You do not want your lawn puddling because this may damage your turf when rolled.  It works best to roll your lawn multiple times going different directions to evenly lay out the soil.  After your lawn is rolled, most likely it is now compact.  To help reduce the compaction caused by rolling your lawn, you aerate after lawn rolling.  Core aeration will help make sure that your grass-roots are able to recover from the compaction.  Aerating your lawn will not negatively impact or un-do the lawn rolling job that you just completed.
