Slit seeder machines provide the mechanical process of planting seed in your lawn.  Slit seeding is a great way to repair damaged lawn areas, because the seeding process inserts the seed in the soil.  Over seeding disperses the seed over top of the ground area instead of planting the seed.  Over seeding is effective if you core aerate your lawn first because you are exposing the seed to soil.  Slit seeders help guaranty that your seed will make dirt contact.

Slit seeding is done through the use of a slit seeding  machine.  Slit seeding is sometimes referred to as power seeding.  All slit seeder machines pretty much work the same way.  There is a seed storage bin on the front or back of the seeding unit that holds your seed.  Below the machine there are metal tines that spin on a drum and grab the seed as it falls to the ground.  These metal tines almost look like butter knives with serrated edges.  If your machine is set to the proper depth, the tines will make contact with the soil.  As the tines spin, they plant the seed into the soil.  Slit seeding can be done to establish a new lawn or repair an existing lawn.

Bluebird S22 Seeder-  This is a great slit seeding machine.  It is very effective and does a great job of evenly dispersing the seed if you have the machine adjusted correctly.  It wouldn’t be practical to seed a large yard with any small walk behind unit.  This unit definitely makes light seeding work for all of your small to mid-sized projects.

Billy Goat OS900 Series Hydrostatic  SP Over-seeder– This unit is engineered quite a bit differently than the Blue Bird unit.  We have never used this specific unit before, but we have used other Billy Goat products and have always been impressed.  The OS900 looks like it would quite a productive unit.

Classen– Classen makes several quality turf seeding units.  Check out their website for different seeding unit options.
